Doctor Spin: Tetris / Play the Gameboy

Out of the UK and licensed by Nintendo, a Eurodance track was created by the renowned composer Andrew Lloyd Weber, known for musicals such as Phantom of the Opera and Cats. Along producer Nigel Wright under the pseudonym Doctor Spin they released a couple of songs, one track being nothing less than a dance mix of the Tetris title music, which is based on the Russian folk-song "Korobeiniki". It was released as a single on multiple formats, from Vinyl 7" and 12" (remix) as well as CD and cassettetape and unleashed to the masses on September 21, 1992.

It actually reached #6 on the UK Single Chart that year. Honestly I had never heard of it until I stumbled upon the CD on a secondhand store some years later, and I recently learned that even a music video exists.

The B side features a track called "Play the Gameboy"

The most interesting of the lot is probably the 12" Vinyl release as well as the CD Maxi Single as they include a 'Tetris - 12" Mix', 'Tetris - Hardcore Mix', 'Tetris - 7" Mix' and finally 'Play the Gameboy'. The 7" Vinyl and Cassette "only" includes 'Tetris' and 'Play the Gameboy', and the vinyl for obvious reasons as there was not room for more. Why they limited the cassette to only two songs is beyond me though.

Publishing was done by Polydor who actually went as far as using a different artwork for the Asian release, resembling the Japanese artwork for the Tetris game.

And there you have it, a slice of the 1990's in Europe :-)

The search feature is still in its alpha stage though.
