Earthworm Jim 3D was developed in Scotland by VIS Interactive. If the name doesn't ring a bell then think of State of Emergency released for the PS2 and Xbox, that game was also developed by VIS Interactive. But VIS also developed other N64 titles such as Tom & Jerry Fists of Furry, Power Puff Girls Chemical X-Traction, which seems to be using the same game engine as Tom & Jerry.

Well Earthworm Jim 3D may have been in development for a few years before eventually being released both in Europe and the US. The game was released in October 1999, but the backside of this proto says "Converted to PAL 2/12/1997 SD". Of course the text could've been a left over from a build of another game, but as Earthworm Jim was VIS Interactive's first N64 title it's kind of doubtful.

The game is playable but is missing the intro, it's actually just a text saying "Lovely intro". The intro also displays the game version as "A 05 272 N64", though the same flash cart has earlier contained another build of the game, being "A 05 131" as a crossed label on the front side states.

Other than that there are no other known differences to the final version of the game.

The prototype ended up in the hands of a collection due to a bankruptcy sale held after VIS went under. A few other N64 protos were found at the same time.
