NEW ALBUM BY ALEX MAUER
August 23rd, 2012 - 5:08 pm - Posted by Martin

The following news from Alex Mauer of Vegavox fame just came in...

Today... a new Alex Mauer album hit the "Pause" music label! It's called "Koalie is Dead", and in my own opinion, it is the best chip music I have created to date.

http://www.iimusic.net/catalog/2012/08/alex-mauer-koalie-dead

"Koalie is Dead" was planned to be the next NES cartridge album in the "Vegavox" series. In 2010, the music was ready but the pixel art inspiration never came. Years passed, and some of the songs found their way onto Penny Arcade TV. Now, the full collection of songs is packaged with the originally intended song order.

Thanks to all of you who have purchased or downloaded my previous albums... it is great to see that some of you own every single cartridge I have made.

Thank you all for your support,

~Alex Mauer

Please note that no NES cartridge is available this time around, but Alex mentioned that when Vegavox 3 happens, it'll definitely have a cartridge release.

NEW NES HOMEBREW IN THE WORKS AT KHAN GAMES
August 23rd, 2012 - 11:37 am - Posted by Martin

KHAN has several projects in the works at the moment and here's yet another which doesn't really have a title yet, other than "Unicorn".

Personally I'd rather see Larry done and released, but maybe that's just me :-)

With that said, this looks to be just as awesome, keep up the good work!

NES HOMEBREW: I WANNA FLIP THE SKY
August 14th, 2012 - 7:34 pm - Posted by Martin

Tom Livak of Gemventure fame is back with a new game called "I Wanna Flip The Sky".

I Wanna Flip The Sky is a game I threw together for the NEO Flash contest. It's a platformer along the lines of I Wanna Be The Guy, Battle Kid, etc. In each level you're trying to reach the exit door while avoiding traps like spikes and conveyor belts. The trick is you can flip gravity a limited number of times each level.

SNES HOMEBREW: CLASSIC KONG
August 10th, 2012 - 6:00 pm - Posted by Martin

I was checking out the NESWORLD forum today and noticed a post from Shiru regarding a new SNES homebrew, and what a pleasant surprise to see a quality SNES homebrew released. I have been working on an SNES homebrew section for some time (gathering material) and this is a great kick in the butt to continue that project.

Anyway Classic Kong is a remake of the old arcade game and it plays really well. Shiru was a part of team BubbleZap who made the game... Awesome! awesome! awesome! thanks to all involved in the making.

MY 2 CENTS ON THE CHEETAHMEN 2 KICKSTARTER, GREG PABICH AND AVGN
August 10th, 2012 - 10:58 am - Posted by Martin

If you're into retro gaming you probably have heard about the Cheetahmen 2 kickstarter created by Greg Pabich who is the guy behind a new "Active Enterprises" company created not too long ago, and Pabich claims to own the rights for the Cheetahmen 2 and Action52 games. He has also registered Cheetahmen name trademarks for use with action figures and cartoons, but another guy has already registered the Cheetahmen name for use in videogames.

I have to be honest and say that I haven't done much research in regard to the new Active Enterprises company, but I would love to see some proof that Greg Pabich actually bought the rights for Action52/Cheetahmen 2 from the old and defunct Active Enterprises company, as it has great relevance to what's going on here.

A while back Pabich released an early version of Cheetahmen, a game that didn't make it to the final version of Action52 due to quality control or whatever (yeah probably not quality control, hah!). The Cheetahmen game was sold with an insane profit, the cheapest option to get the game is $200 which in my oppinion is a total rip off, but anyone if of course free to spend their money on whatever they wish to spend it on,

That leads us to the Kickstarter recently created which offers a fully playable version of the Cheetahmen 2 game, originally containing a bug that crashes the game after level 4 of 6. At first it, to me, sounded like Greg Pabich would hire a bunch of people to recreate the game, but it turns out that Greg plans just to patch the existing version of the game, most likely with a patch that already is available.

This time around however the price isn't nearly as insane, for $60 you can secure yourself a complete, cart with box and manual, copy of the game for play on any NES deck worldwide, as the carts are manufactured by RetroZone and uses their special lockout(in) chip that works with any NES and most clones.

Now what I have against this is the way Greg Pabich promotes himself and uses Kickstarter to raise the money. Fact is that this is nothing more that a patched version of something that already exists and in my oppinion kickstarter shouldn't be used for such projects, and where is the proof that Pabich actually owns the rights for Cheetahmen 2? If he doesn't, this fundraiser is illegal.

Most of the debates online have been regarding AVGN and Pat the NES Punk's endorsement of Pabich's project. While I find it distasteful of them to support nothing more than a hackjob and a reproduction, why shouldn't they be allowed to support whatever they want to? But you always have to think of the consequences, and in this situation I think the AVGN didn't think, or didn't want to let people know that he got paid to show his support.

Personally I think the Cheetahmen 2 and Active Enterprises should be left alone as part of the history. I believe Pabich only is here to make some cash when he found out he owned an old prototype he once was handed by Vince Perri of Active Enterprises back in the day, in hopes of a distribution deal with Pabich.

Yeah sure Cheetahmen 2 probably is the worst NES game ever created and Pabich also promotes it as such, but just leave it alone as the piece of history it is, a sad ending to an adventure back in the day by a guy, Vince Perri, who had a great idea(s) but were unable to put the needed quality into it.

So my bottom line is, do not support Greg Pabich in his greed to profit on the Cheetahmen brand.

GAME SPOTLIGHT: GOLD MEDAL CHALLENGE '92
August 5th, 2012 - 5:36 pm - Posted by Martin

Second update of the day and revival of an old and often forgotten (from my part) section of the site... the game spotlight.

In case you haven't noticed, the olympics are currently being held in London, England, but way back in 1992 it was being held in Barcelona, Spain, and Capcom had an olympic game in the works for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
